So do you just hold the lens so it is facing backwards to do these? I am somewhat confused as to the technique ^^;

Yes, I did this handheld, but there is an adapter you can buy cheap: Nikon BR-2A
This is for lenses with 52mm filter threads.
Remember that this makes the lens all manual. You have to set the camera to manual
and also set the aperture on the lens. (f/8 seems to be the best)
But you get really close. Even better if you do this with a Bellows: [link]

Yeah I've seen people using bellows allot for macro work can't really afford some at the moment though kinda saving for a new body >.<;
